Working at x-runner

Milayda Sedano

“All mIMG_0060y life I have worked as a cleaning maid in homes. I began working at x-runner in 2013, helping with the bucket washing and cleaning the treatment plant. In October of last year I was officially hired to take care of the waste pick-up service and to be in charge of customer service. My first challenge at my new job was to solve problems and complaints from customers: I w
as afraid of not being able to answer correctly or, worse, of not knowing the answer. However, experiencing face to face the happiness of our customers and seeing that we really improve their lives helped me overcome my fears. My next big challenge was learning to use a computer: I had never in my life used a laptop, and I did not even know how to switch it on. x-runner supported me with private lessons, but then I decided to continue with the course on my own to learn more. Now I can enter data from paper to a spreadsheet in Google Drive! My next challenge is to learn how to use our new data management system,, in my daily work. I am happy because now I can do things, like working on a computer, that I would not have dreamed of before. Mostly I feel blissful because my daughter is proud of me and because I feel I’m a good example for her. I want to encourage her to follow in my footsteps and to have the courage to overcome herself!”

AVINA Stiftung and x-runner

When x-runner was still in its early stages and just about to wrap up its first pilot with 40 families in Lima, AVINA Stiftung in Switzerland was the first Foundation to believe in our vision of waterless sanitation and to support us with a grant to finance our expansion. Over the last two decades, AVINA Stiftung has been a crucial initiator for many initiatives and organizations that have shaped the social enterprise landscape in Latin America and that have also influenced directly or indirectly x-runner’s work.

Therefore, we are especially excited to announce that AVINA will support x-runner for a second time. We are looking forward to continuing this partnership, from which we benefit beyond the mere financial support also through valuable inputs spurring from the Foundation’s team vast experience.

“My name is Clemencia Zuñiga and I have had my Family’s toilet for three years now. Before having the dry toilet, my life was quite different: I used to have a pit latrine and it was very uncomfortable, it caused many problems because it attracted cockroaches, flies and bad odours. Another problem was that it filled up very quickly, and since we could not make a deeper hole because of the rocks, we had to make another hole in the ground every few years. Since I have had Family’s my life has changed, everything is cleaner and more hygienic. I am very happy, because now my daughters and I feel like we have a normal life. Besides I do not need to be worried about accidents, like them falling into the pit latrine. I can invite visitors to my home because we do not have flies or cockroaches anymore, now our home is clean and smell-free. I recommend Family’s to everyone, especially due to its effect on your home’s hygiene and more importantly because it does not use water.”

For the x-runner team the year 2015 resembles a big and bright firework!

The greatest excitement, of course, is our progress in the field: we tripled the number of customer households in the past year! We are immensely proud to be serving over 2000 individuals and managing almost daily pick-up operations. Today, to have a “family’s” dry toilet fills our customers with pride and joy! They know that they now live in a healthier and cleaner home, they can invite their friends over for dinner, and they feel empowered by having made the right choice for their family!
